green green green - ny in the spring and the irish invasion...

starting of my report with the first really nice day in new york...spent it outside studying with an overpried hot chocolate and a nice apricot pie from le pain quotidien ..yes this concept didn't make it to Austria, probably a thousand kilometers away, but over an ocean.... 2 sheets drowned, but totally worth it! At this moment: 3 group projects going on simultaneously, a case, an essay and an exam, talking about "immanenter prüfungscharakter"..
Making me think of all the possible improvements to our system...A lecture in the US? two essays, 20 pages of reading every week, two exams, probably one of the most brilliant and witty professors I ever had, remembering students' names and midterm-feedbacks that were taken seriously and followed by action in the next class.... Brought to you by NYU entertainment...And yes from now on I'll force everyone who visits to come to this class to me!

skyline.... when the sun goes down - probably a good soundtrack for this moment...

St. Patrick's Day Parade in New York..amazing how many of the older demographic (the US is all about politically correct language) are still motivated enough to march 30 blocks...

...also amazing what kinds of things you can make green..(certainly not US- policies though) .besides beer....

Surprisingly an almost underrepresentation of red haired people, as if they were hiding, fearing to be crownd as "St. Patrick's Day Parade King and Queen"... But as a stalker, as I am one, you find your ways....

...Irish people fostering European stereotypes about America..

On a more sophisticated level - visiting the competition in
Cambridge, the tourist level equals Times Square...
Had a great weekend in German in Boston with Michele
and Madeleine...perfect Harvard Tour with"German"- german
speaking swiss Valentin...  :) Enjoyed Boston night life even
without a passport, thanks to connections..
Who would have believed that Boston is more strict than
New York City...But then again - New England with white
churches, covered bridges and nice fences, over which neighbors
share a cup of freshly squeeed lemonade,  just purchased from a kid
on the street, that was raising money for its soccer team, that
his dad's the coach of... Ordinary Life in America...

Carola as Myth Buster or Myth intensifier: Yes people in Harvard row! They row, row, row...

Students here must feel like in Plimoth Plantation, for all of you who are not as freaky about New England as I am - open air museum about the first settlers in America... reminds me somehow of Europe's seemingly destiny as the world's open air museum, once India has lapped us and China's enjoying a Red Bull at the business finishline...

red and white, patriotic feelings arousing inside of me...

Most amazing part of Boston - been here 2 years ago and fell in love with it - unaffordale Beacon Hill in the sun...hilly and rocky, nice small talk with a lawyer...a place to settle down...well at least after having earned a few million dollars... the dominant red building? making the adaption process of Harvard graduates easier.

Old & New Meeting houses in Boston's center..

Getting up early - breakfast from Whole Food's - Boston Common, great day!

Synagogue I stumbled upon near some appartment building near Charles river...

St. Patrick's Day in Boston - interesting alternative to New York: Here people are allowed to throw things like green necklages and cupholders that say: Kiss me I'm Snapple...Dangerous? Definetly! Fun? Even more so!

Even  Boston can't live without New York apparently....If you can't see it, it is a crappy picture I admit it, YES it's people dressed up as statues... but St. Paddy's Day is all about people doing what they want and freedom, so I guess the statue of liberty fits in pretty well with this concept...could also have something to do with Ellis Island, coming to the US blabla, but this explanation doesn't account for the seriousness of the event, so I'll stick with my concept...

huuuuge Snapple bottle, not technically Irish...neither are the Ghostbusters, unfortunately I didn't get a picture of them, that suddenly appeared on the streets...but as anarchy reigned on Boston's streets this day, some order had to be enforced..

masses of people in South Boston, the most Irish part of Boston...und logistically not well positioned...

...the result, crowded....never have I ever seen so much green on a Subway...

little inside joke for my best Austrian roomie ( we don't want to offend anyone here in the US, you are GREAT guys! Well actually one of you should get the joke, come on Emily make me proud!).... No don't want to be Mrs. Hayden Planetarium for the rest of my life!

haven't done a cake in a while, turned out pretty well...With the help of Katja's recipe (thank you for sharing your wisdom), disposable pans of d'agostinos (thank you overpriced supermarket next door with some of the rudest cashiers in the country and one of the worst selections of yoghurts ever seen on earth, 5$ for salad - not normal!), a K-Mart mixer, candles bought at the Broadyway Panhandler ( best shop ever, almost made me buy my dream kitchen aid kitchen machine, going there every week from now on!), some improvisional skills and a lot of cursing...(mainly myself)

random pic of books at Bobst Library, children's books to be specific, spotted Little Women,
the book on which one my favourite shows ever is based on - Eine Fröhliche Familie, and
the Wizard of Oz....
The Museum of Natural History - going there on a Saturday - total NY beginner's error... actually Emily had to go there for a class assignment, so I said I would go there with her...We ended up waiting for 45 minutes at W 4th Street station as we were literally on the wrong track.. By the time the right subway came, Emily had to go to work, and I went to the museum by myself...New York!

The big whale, yes that's the dude that Barney almost killed!

 old guys, hanging out there...

after wandering through history I engaged in a 20 block walk through Central Park...and took some nice pics with my fancy smartphone...how smart's that....and no not any photoshop of any kind: 1. it's really that pretty, and 2. I wouldn't know how to do that...

and after a quick stop at NYC's craziest place on a Saturday afternoon, no not Times Square, the Apple Store on 5th Av, and also the one with the nicest staff ever, I went back downtown...

What else did I do? Went to the gym at least 3 times, ( This is not a lie, I have witnesses) went to the cinema twice, walked from Washington Square Park to Greenwich Hotel approx. 45 times, saw at least 3 dogs during each of these walks, had 15 akward smalltalky conversations with the security guard, ordered late night cookies, hung out with Chelsea's great friends from Nebraska, celebrated Emily's birthday, went to the NYU film festival, found the greatest travel bookstores, bought 3 travel books, lots of rosmary rools at Amy's bread, smoothies at Whole Food's and 3 kinds of cereals, because they were so cheap,  new shampoo, went to the hairdresser, had my introduction to NYUMUNC, listened a lot to the Strokes, Beirut and Arcade Fire, tried to keep up with my Economist and Businessweek and New York in general.

Sorry for all this rambling, but every once in a while I remember why I once wanted to become a writer...
and then the passion comes back to life, bossted by the artsy atmosphere of NYC..
